Vasant Panchami is celebrated on Tuesday, 4th February in 2014. Vasant Panchami also known as Basant Panchami and Sri Panchami. It is a Hindu festival celebrated enthusiastically in India, mostly the northern regions. The festival of Basant Panchami is celebrated on fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magha Maas. Basant Panchami symbolizes the beginning of spring, denoted by flowering and blooming of trees and crops. On this day Lord Vishnu, God Radha Krishna and Goddess Saraswati is worshiped with Yellow, white and Pink flowers, Water offerings, incense, lamp etc. Naivedayam (Rice prepared with jaggery) and yellow colored Halwa is offered to God. On this Basant Panchami day perform the Saraswati Pooja within Panchami Tithi is very important.

Basant Panchami is the day that Hindus beleives Goddess Saraswati was born. Many Hindu astrologers consider Vasant Panchami as Abujha day which is auspicious to start all good work. According to this belief whole Vasant Panchami day is auspicious to perform Saraswati Puja. On this day in Basara temple, Aksharabhyasam or Vidya Praasana is done for children who are at the age of 3 to 5 years. Being an auspicious occasion, children are taught their first words, hence marking the beginning of their learning period.

Goddess Saraswati is the deity of wisdom, music and art learning along with goddess Parvati and Lakshmi, Saraswati is one of the three most important deities in Hindu culture. On this day Goddess Saraswati is dressed in yellow garments, yellow being the symbol of spiritual knowledge. People also dress up in yellow clothes and offer yellow flowers to deities in the temples. The four hands of the Saraswati symbolize the different sides of human personality in learning. Goddess Saraswati seated on a white lotus and is dressed in a pure white sari. When seated on a peacock, she signifies that wisdom suppresses ego. The famous Saraswati temple is in Basara. According to purana lord Brahma after creating the universe was very disappointed to see the silence present everywhere. Then goddess Saraswati gave sound to his creation through her Veena.
