Maha Shivaratri is known as birthday of Lord Shiva and devotees worship Lord Shiva in Lingam form. Maha Shivaratri is on Tuesday, 17th February in 2015. Shivaratri is celebrated on Chaturdasi Tithi during Krishna Paksha of the Magha Masam of according to South Indian (Telugu) Calendar. 14th night of the new moon during the dark half of the month of Phalguna according to North Indian calendar. However both, North Indians and South Indians, celebrate Maha Shivaratri on same day. Maha Shivaratri is a night dedicated to worship Lord Shiva. Shivaratri is also spelled as Shivratri, Maha Shivaratri, Shivarathri and Sivaratri. The name Shivaratri means Shiva+Ratri. Shiva is lord Shiva and Ratri is night i.e is enchanting Lord Shiva mantra whole night.

Procedure on Maha Shivaratri:

On the auspicious day of Maha Shivaratri people woke up early and clean the home and then completes the daily routine activities. people will do head bath and perform the Shiva puja. Abishekam (Milk, Pure water, curd, ghee, honey and sandalwood paste) is performed on this day. On this day of Maha Shivaratri fasting is observed without drinking water until the evening (Surya Astamayam) Sun goes down. After that people will offer the fruits, flowers as Naivedaya to Lord Shiva. Especially on Maha Shivaratri Puja with "Bilva" leaves is important. Lord Shiva likes Bilva leaves. And offers lighting the light (Dupam and Deepam). Then the devotees eat the fruits and the whole night Should be awake enchanting the name of Lord Shiva. The fast is broken only the next day morning after offering the naivedyam (Rice, leafy vegetable, curd and ghee) to Lord Shiva. Maha Shivaratri fasting observed by both Men and Women.

On this day the mantra should chant on the whole day is

 "Om Namah Shivaya"

On Shivaratri day devotees should take second bath in the evening before doing Shiva Puja or visiting temple. On This day married women praying for the well-being and long life of their husbands. And unmarried women pray for a husband like Him. Men also performs Puja for Lord Shiva for well-being. The people want to take the vrata Monday will be auspicious to start the Shivaratri vratam. Shiva Lingam was first worshiped by Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. The time of lingodbhavam is at 12 'O' clock On the Maha Shivaratri day. After that Shiva Parvathi Kalyanam is performed in the temples.

Significance of Maha Shivaratri:

Lord Shiva drank deadly poison during churning of the ocean and his throat turned blue. Shivratri celebrates this event by which Shiva saved the world. The devotees strictly perform all the rituals of Maha Shivratri as it is considered to be an auspicious day to worship Lord Shiva, and it is believed that they will be cleared of their past sins. Maha Shivaratri is also spelled as Sivaratri, Shivarathri and Shivratri. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in temples highly on this whole day and night Puja and abhishekam will be continuously performed. on Maha Shivaratri day the temples will be fully filled up with the devotes to see the special pooja performed on this day.

If anyone wants to start Maha Shivaratri fasting should start on Shivaratri came on Monday will be auspicious and Shivaratri fasting should be continued till the end of life time. Shivaratri fasting cannot be broken for any reason.
